REMACHINE

REMACHINE explores the interplay between humans and an inescapable hyper-mechanised environment. At the mercy of their own technology, the dancers navigate the unstable ground under their feet. The performance unravels as a chain of cause and effect. In a cascade of both worldly and otherworldly forces, a dance between constraint and liberty, labour and ritual, emerges as a contradictory state of contemporaneity. Via a powerful orchestration of both vocal and physical material, and in a new collaboration with composer Anna von Hausswolff, REMACHINE draws its viewer into a meditation on discipline, relentlessness, insatiability, and the power of the mind over the body.

With REMACHINE, Jefta van Dinther strives to create a Gesamtkunstwerk that brings together dance, light, sound and scenography into a monumental whole. His sophisticated aesthetic creates a pressing, attention-grabbing image. The central theme is the relationship between man and machine. The dancers move and sing throughout the performance on a large spinning disc. They make their way through time like a disciplined, relentless and insatiable marching chorus. A balancing act between leading and being led, between autonomy and dependence.

Van Dinther shows the powerlessness as well as the grandeur of people confronted with the inexorable course of the world. REMACHINE wants to touch us, to make us feel what it is to be human in an unmerciful world, to stand up and go on in spite of everything.

In life, we often feel as if we are both autonomous beings making choices and cogs in a system, governed by greater worldly forces. REMACHINE stages this inner friction, a space of limbo.
